About

New Weird Australia is produced on the sacred land of the Darug People. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which we work and pay our respects to Indigenous Elders past and present. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Neither one genre nor another, New Weird Australia is designed to challenge our understanding of what music can and should be. We support new, eclectic and experimental Australian music in a variety of ways.

Here’s a few things you might be interested in digging into if you’re new to New Weird.

Compilations & Artist Releases

We started life back in 2009 by releasing free compilations, and since then we’ve released 30 of them.

All of our releases are distributed free through Bandcamp and Soundcloud, with recent releases also available through DPSs such as Apple, Tidal and Spotify. Funds raised from the releases are donated to a variety of charities and causes, most recently Seed Mob, Firesticks Alliance and Bundjalung Community Flood Relief.

We also have ‘compilation companion’ Spotify playlists, featuring music from featured artists.

We produce individual artist releases under the sublabel New Editions. A further series of artists releases is available in our now defunct Wood And Wire sub label.

Podcasts

Our podcast series runs to over 100 episodes and includes interviews with and performances by artists such as The Necks, Penelope Trappes, Laurence Pike, Ela Stiles, Fia Fiell, Lawrence English, Rites Wild, Severed Heads and more.

The podcast also features archive live recordings from New Weird Australia events and interviews and live sessions from the original FBi Radio program.

Although currently resting, you can subscribe to the New Weird Australia podcast on Apple PodcastsSpotify or check out the full archive here on the website.

Newsletter

Our newsletter is the most direct way for us to share what New Weird Australia has been up to. Subscribe to keep up to date with our compilations, podcasts and other activities and proclivities.

Socials

We’ve despaired many (many) times about social media; particularly about the ‘bait and switch’ from an original premise / promise of a thriving, engaged community; to a model that fails on so many levels to meaningfully connect us to the people and things that we give a fuck about. It seems like a simple thing to get right, but the most popular platforms are driven by other desires, and in doing so, they screw it up spectacularly.

So the newsletter is the most direct way to share what New Weird Australia has been up to, but we do have a presence on FacebookInstagram, Threads and YouTube if you want to follow along.

Are you making music?

If you’re making music, we want to hear what you’re up to – email us some links to your work via info at newweirdaustralia dot com dot au, or hit us up on Soundcloud. We can’t always respond quickly, but be assured that we listen to everything that gets sent our way.
